Solar Photovoltaic FAQ
- What's the first step if I
want solar photovoltaic power to pay for my electric needs?
Contact us, of course! We can use
computer based
satellite imagery to view your proposed site and learn the
basics of your project. We'll discuss your goals and
expectations, and, well, get to know each other a bit!
- What does NJSC do to determine if my site receives
sufficient sunlight?
We measure the available sunlight
(insolation) at your proposed site using
state-of-the-art tools and software from which we can
determine if your site probably capable of meeting the 80%
efficiency requirement.
Then, depending on other factors such as panel and inverter efficiencies, we can
determine generation levels.
- Will my photovoltaic system pay for itself? If so, when and how?
Assuming your site will qualify for
available state and federal incentives, it surely will pay
for itself. When, however, is a question that's frequently
over simplified. We developed our own software which allows
us to model return on investment based on factors including
the rising cost of electricity, solar certificate
(SREC) values,
loan costs if applicable, and more. We'll go over these assumptions
with you, entering realistic numbers. Your projected
return on investment analysis will then be
personalized and you'll have a good feel for how it was
calculated.
- What solar rebates and incentives are available in New
Jersey and how is that likely to change?
New Jersey offers a rebate
for solar installations (up to a certain size) but rebate
values are in flux. SRECs (solar renewable energy certificates)
provide the largest percentage of state incentives.
Let us explain the state's SREC program to you and how we
can facilitate obtaining maximum value for your SRECs.
- What will a system cost that covers my entire electricity
usage?
Your total PV system cost
depends on the parts cost, installation cost, and how
productive the system is. Efficient design can
substantially shorten the payback time. We perform a
complete analysis as part of our solar feasibility service.
- What are the "hidden" and ongoing costs of a
photovoltaic system?
Many systems are priced
without a good grounding system, which cuts costs but
exposes the system to failure if struck by lightning.
Other than that, photovoltaic systems contain no moving parts and are
highly reliable. Our financial model allows us to make
a maintenance cost assumption nonetheless, such as inverter
replacement during the life of the system.
- How will I be credited for producing more power than I use?
Most systems are connected to the
utility grid. If so, on a daily basis you "bank" power
mid-day as your system produces more than you consume.
As the sun goes down you draw power back from the grid.
Ideally, by the end of the year your meter will have spun
backward as much as it spun forward. If you produced
more than you used your utility will buy it back from you
annually, paying you their cost of production (wholesale
rate). Over sizing a system is not cost effective.
- Are advancements in solar
panels or equipment going render what I install today
obsolete?
While advancements
are always possible, a photovoltaic system installed
today will continue saving you money regardless of any new
advancement - which do seem painfully slow coming. Waiting for unforeseen technology amounts to paying the utility company for your power
while hoping for sunnier days.
- How do I know a good solar installer from a not-so-good
installer?
Even installers with happy
customers may have installed a photovoltaic system that's not optimal and
would take longer to pay for itself than it should. We
measure the site ourselves and perform "what if" scenarios
to arrive at the most efficient solution.
